In 1979, several Ohio teenagers (Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso) make a zombie movie using a Super 8 camera. While filming, the friends witness a horrific train derailment, but are lucky to escape with their lives. Soon after, a series of unexplained events and disappearances occur, and they soon realize that this disaster was no accident. Deputy Jackson Lamb (Kyle Chandler), the father of one of the children, searches for the horrifying truth behind the accident.
