In the film, Joe Pesci plays a New Yorker who mistakes a black knit shirt under a black leather jacket, accentuated by a gold chain around his neck, for elegant court attire. If he were a defendant in the Bronx, he might be right, but the film is set in Alabama, and he’s a defense lawyer. His cousin (Ralph Macchio) and his friend (Mitchell Whitfield), two innocent college students, are accused of murdering a store owner. The evidence speaks for itself, but the worst thing that goes against it is Pesci’s apparent lack of legal experience.
