In the Heat of the Night Movie Story
African-American Philadelphia police detective Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) is framed for murder by the racist police chief Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger) of the small city of Sparta, Mississippi. After proving his own innocence as well as that of another man, Tibbs teams up with Gillespie to track down the real culprit. Their investigation explores every social class in the city, and Tibbs finds both enemies and unexpected friends in his search for the truth.
